The word “north” (zophane) is related to the Hebrew zophune, “hidden,” or “dark.” Literally, it is the “promontory,” and therefore the sacred. The references to north are eloquent… The Book of Enoch in particular describes this cardinal geography:
And the four quarters which are called North are divided into three parts. The first is the place of man’s habitation, the second is the oceans and forests and rivers, darkness and fog. The third part is the Garden of Justice.
If intelligence and Justice are to the West, Wisdom, Grace and Eternity are to the East, and the North is the crown of God (Kether), according to the Kabbalah. Presumably it is the Pole…
